NAB has recently wrapped up and many of you have been wondering what’s new? Is there anything that can help me light night exteriors?
As I walked around, I found myself surprised at some interesting items that I've been waiting for years to hit the market. Mole Richardson 20k LED Fresnel One of the big items on my list of “must see at NAB” is the Mole Richardson 20k LED Fresnel. Even though it is still in prototype you can see they're going down a path no company has gone before. . I spoke with Mike Parker and Steve Werner at Mole and apparently the output on the daylight model is said to be on par with a 12k HMI Fresnel. I think this will be the change our industry has been looking for. The current prototype is at 28 amps with two Power Con to Edison power feeders. The thought is you would be able to run a 60amp bates to the head or stab the light in on house power from two different breakers. The two power inputs do not mix so it would not matter what phase you are on. If you think about the possible opportunity that can come from having this much light and also to be able to run on house power or even putt putt generators, you can also rig 2 on a lighting platform and only have to run 100amp up the arm with a lunch box, maybe add some DMX and you can control this from the ground on your Ipad. Mole has added lumen radio to it but I'm still on the fence how much I trust using that aspect outside. They have confirmed that a 40k will not be built. Instead parts of the head are modular so upgrades down the road can be performed to increase output as much as another 10amps. After playing around a little here’s what I'd like to see happen before they release it. The number one issue was Plus and Minus green. I think we all can agree we'd like to see this in all LED units. The second is to make the LED chip interchangeable. Have it pop out like a globe so you can change from daylight to tungsten in the field. The 20k LED already opens up in the back like 20k/18k's. Pros
We'll see where they take it from here, but I've been told they should be close to market by Cine Gear. Update: We had a conversation with Mole Richardson and will be scheduling a demo soon. Take a look at their specs: http://mole.com/products/view/LED-spacelites/24_20K_LED
